Celebrating 50 Years of Memories

February 02, 2017

2017 marks the 50th Anniversary of the Finger Lakes Federal Credit Union.  For a half-century, FLFCU has offered alternative banking options to local area educators, employees, students, and residents. As the Finger Lakes community has grown, so has our Credit Union. Now, as we stand on the precipice of the next fifty years, we want to honor the Credit Union’s history.

Original Member List

The Credit Union was founded by Gene McFadden, who was also the Credit Union’s first member and manager, in the spring of 1967, and established as the Geneva School Employees Credit Union.

The Credit Union was run from the basement of Geneva Middle School (now the Finger Lakes Community College Geneva Center). Gene took deposits by mail or in person and managed the books. The Credit Union grew steadily, began adding other school systems to their charter, and eventually moved to the third floor of the Geneva Middle School, and then 48 Castle Street in Geneva.

Finger Lakes Federal Credit Union Branches

In 1984, the Credit Union had almost 5,000 members and many other employer groups were hoping to join. This is when the name was changed to Finger Lakes Federal Credit Union and the Credit Union was moved to its current location. Then, in May of 2009, the Credit Union expanded its membership to include Ontario, Seneca, and Yates counties. Today, the Credit Union has approximately 15,000 members with branches in Geneva, Ovid, and Phelps.

We will be celebrating our vast history at our Annual Member Dinner on March 15th. Tickets go on sale February 15th and we hope you’ll join us! We’ll be electing new board members and learning about the amazing year Finger Lakes Federal Credit Union had in 2016.
